U.S. President Donald Trump met with Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi to discuss the situation in Iran and energy security. Trump welcomed Japan's stance that Iran must not develop nuclear weapons and praised Japan's willingness to participate in talks to ensure shipping safety in the Strait of Hormuz.
However, the related commitments remain vague. Many countries, including Japan, have only expressed principled support for shipping safety cooperation, without specifying military actions or concrete implementation plans.
Analysts point out that Japan faces legal obstacles to directly participating in military escorts due to its post-war constitution. Meanwhile, the conflict in Iran has led to over 1,000 oil and gas transport ships being stranded in the Persian Gulf, increasing energy supply risks.
Beyond security commitments, Japan proposed a comprehensive cooperation plan, including energy investment and military industry expansion, to strengthen strategic ties with the United States.
