Coinbase announced it will acquire the prediction market startup, The Clearing Company, marking the crypto trading platform's tenth acquisition this year. This move aims to diversify its business and reduce reliance on revenue from traditional digital asset trading.
Prediction markets allow users to trade contracts related to the outcomes of real-world events, such as elections, economic data, and sports events. They are seen as tools to convert collective expectations into market prices. Supporters believe their pricing mechanism is more forward-looking than polls, but regulatory concerns over potentially blurring the line between finance and gambling are rising.
As competition intensifies, trading platforms are accelerating the expansion of multi-asset product lines. Coinbase previously launched a prediction market platform and plans to open stock trading, placing it in direct competition with traditional brokerages. The company stated that the transaction with The Clearing Company is expected to be completed in January, though specific terms were not disclosed.
